The first season of The Last of Us has already gone down in television history as one of the very best, with many citing it as the best series to have been released in recent years. Restoring faith in the video game adaptation and doing so with enormous heart and jaw-dropping quality, the bar was always going to be extremely high for the second outing to hit. Well, despite a hugely impressive critical reception for Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann‘s adaptation, it seems as if viewers don’t quite hold the second season in as high regard as they did the first.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, The Last of Us Season 2 has registered an audience score of 71% so far following the premiere of the opening episode, which, although much higher than many other series have or will achieve, is considerably lower than the previous season’s comparative figure. Season 1 received an audience rating of 88% to go with its “Certified Fresh” critical score of 96%; Season 2 managed to maintain the same critical score as its predecessor, which in itself is enough proof of the second season’s triumph.
Bella Ramsey Promises an “Intense Roller Coaster” From Season 2
Just one episode might’ve been released in The Last of Us Season 2 so far, but the emotional ramifications of the first outing are already being felt. With The Last of Us Season 3 already announced and stars Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal already back to their best, it’s clear that this is going to be another unmissable season of television from Mazin and Druckmann. Although an emotional road lies ahead with six episodes still to air, thoughts inevitably turn to what is in store come the finale, something Ramsey herself spoke of in a recent interview with Collider’s Christina Radish. After admitting that “people are going to feel like they’ve been on a pretty intense roller coaster,” Ramsey added:
“I just hope that people keep their seatbelts on the whole time because it’s pretty mad. I think that people will hopefully feel really satisfied by the journey of it. I hope people are slightly emotionally traumatized because it’s supposed to make you feel it a lot. You might be angry at the showrunners and everyone involved because of how much it will make you feel things.”
The Last of Us Season 2 is streaming now on Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on your favorite shows.
