Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) has been missing from Firehouse 51 in the past few Chicago Fire Season 13 episodes. After a rough start, Carver’s mental health continued to deteriorate, and he decided to seek help. However, showrunner Andrea Newman revealed to TV Line, that “Carver will be back in the next few episodes,” adding “But he’s coming back with a surprise.” Newman remained reticent about the nature of the surprise, but Carver’s surprises usually catch Violet (Hanako Greensmith) unaware and this might be another instance. The last time he returned with one was in the season premiere when he arrived from Texas with his highschool girlfriend, Tori.
Season 13 has been full of ups and downs for the character, with the downs outweighing the ups. “He’s definitely a little more conflicted this season. Everything in the past seasons, he’s been very like, ‘Hey, this is where I’m at.’ This season, he’s a little bit more in conflict not only personally, but like interpersonally with other people in the firehouse, and I think that’s forced him inward again, and that’s what we’re dealing with,” Lockett told the outlet previously. Carver finally admitted that he had a drinking problem and went to rehab. His return will update on how that process went and if he figured out what was causing him to self-destruct in this manner. Violet also tried to reach out when he was in rehab but never got a response. His return should explain why.

The episode utilizes a different technique as the team revisits the incident where a major blunder occurred. “[Episode 18] is a thrill ride unlike any we’ve done before. Told with flashbacks and unique POVs, Chief Boden leads our team on a search to discover the how, who, and why of a fierce firefight that ended in disaster,” Newman teased. It’s unclear which firefighter is the casualty, but all shall be revealed in two days.
