Emma D’Arcy is flying from Westeros to the silver screen in a major way. The House of the Dragon breakout star has officially joined Tom Cruise in the untitled new feature from Oscar-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, on which filming is already underway in the United Kingdom ahead of an October 2, 2026 release through Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment. D’Arcy spoke to Deadline where they revealed they would be working alongside “masters of their craft”.
“I’m delighted to be working with such extraordinary and exacting artists as Alejandro and Tom. They are the masters of their craft, and witnessing them in combination has been a privilege.”
The project is Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since 2015’s The Revenant (the one where Leonardo DiCaprio went inside a bear) and it reunites him with his Birdman co-writers Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, alongside Sabina Bierman. Per the official synopsis, the story follows “the most powerful man in the world [who] embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
Cruise has described the experience of working with Iñárritu and the cast as “the time of my life,” is the lead in a hugely impressive cast that includes the likes of Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
Who is Emma D’Arcy?
D’Arcy is best known to audiences for their Golden Globe–nominated performance as Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Their most recent film role was in Eva Husson’s Mothering Sunday (2021), opposite Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù. They also produced and starred in The Talent, a short film that earned a British Independent Film Award nomination last year.
Meanwhile, House of the Dragon Season 2 wrapped with Rhaenyra being proclaimed queen and preparing for all-out civil war in Westeros — a cliffhanger that fans will have to wait until Season 3 to see resolved. Fortunately, work on Season 3 is also underway, with HBO confirming that production of the series initially got underway at the end of March. When it will return to our screens is another matter entirely, but let’s hope it won’t be too long. Until then, D’Arcy will get to work in Cruise’s next big picture.
The untitled Tom Cruise/Alejandro G. Iñárritu movie is currently in production and will release on October 2, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
