It’s official, Catwoman is about to undergo what appears to be another origin overhaul, one that could change Batman lore forever. This isn’t the first time Selina Kyle’s backstory has been reworked, as she’s experienced multiple retcons and tweaks over her 80-plus years in comics, but this latest change might be her most significant yet.
DC’s All In initiative introduced the Absolute Universe and several new titles to the publisher’s monthly lineup. However, it also brought changes to ongoing series, with creative team shake-ups kicking off fresh storylines. Catwoman was among the titles to receive a new team, with Torunn Grønbekk, Marianna Ignazzi, and Patricio Delpeche taking the reins.
Grønbekk has taken Selina to Tokyo for this next chapter, where the feline hero finds not only her life in danger but also confronts faces from her past. Now, with Catwoman #75 set to release on April 16, 2025, the series promises to return to the beginning by re-exploring Selina Kyle’s origin story.
DC Teases the Tragedy That Will Redefine Selina Kyle’s Origin

DC has released a four-page preview for Catwoman #75, available in the gallery above. Right off the bat, this issue stands out, as the text reveals the events take place “years ago, two days before everything went wrong.” It’s an ominous setup that immediately captures attention. However, the preview leaves fans in suspense, offering only the beginning of the story. The pages establish a gathering between some of Selina’s old acquaintances, including Evie Hall, who is expected to play a key role in the looming events that are about to unfold.
What truly signals that this issue is setting up a new origin for Catwoman (and altering a major piece of Batman lore) is the official synopsis. It reads: “IT’S THE BEGINNING OF THE END! Discover the ruinous event that sounded the death knell for Evie Hall and her compatriots and gave birth to Catwoman as we journey back to the beginning of the end of it all.” In other words, readers are being taken back to the moment everything began to fall apart for both Evie Hall and Selina Kyle. This shared tragedy will serve as the catalyst for Selina’s transformation into Catwoman. With this, DC appears poised to redefine what ultimately pushed Selina to become the Gotham City Siren fans have come to know and love.

Why Is DC Giving Catwoman a New Origin?

While fans are undoubtedly excited to see what new tragic event will set Selina Kyle on her journey to becoming Catwoman, a natural question arises: why? Why is DC changing Selina’s origin, and why now? While the full answer may not become clear for some time, it strongly suggests that Grønbekk has larger plans in store for the Siren. After all, there would be no reason to alter Catwoman’s origin unless a future storyline required it to be properly set up. If there’s one thing fans can take away from this origin change, it’s that big things are on the horizon for Catwoman.
